Spring is a chance for new beginning and a time to grow in one's connection to art. One of our favorite art activities this time of year is going out and finding rocks. Using found objects in nature to create art is a great activity for kids that doesn't cost a lot. It helps to get energy out and breathe in some fresh spring air.

Rocks can be stacked to create a beautiful sculpture. The art of stacking rocks is called rock balancing and some know it as cairn. It takes a steady hand, calm soul and a keen eye.  It has a history of a spiritual connection and is visually appealing. It can also be left in nature for someone else to stumble upon and enjoy the serene beauty.

Taking home a few rocks allows the memory to also come home. Whether it's a small rock to put on a desk or windowsill as a reminder of the serenity or taking a rock and painting on it.

Across the United States there are Facebook groups dedicated to painted rocks that people leave in random spots for others to find. These small acts of kindness can put a smile on someone's face or give them hope that day.
